Getting My House In Order

“When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.”  Confucius
I came across a cartoon that made me giggle… A boss and his employee are standing there…the boss has his arms crossed and the employee is holding a sheet of paper in his hand.  The employee says to his boss, “I’m just gonna go ahead and use these New Year’s resolutions from last January.”

Come on now, we’ve all been there. If we're honest about it, sometimes our goal list does look a little too familiar to last year's.

As I was going over my goals from last 2012 and reflecting on my success/failures ….I found a familiar looking undone goal, one that seems to be an ongoing one for me, and one that I’ve come to ask myself if I can actually reach it.  It’s my 'de-cluttering my home' goal.

I really do want less ‘stuff’ in my life.  I want to keep what makes me feel happy and get rid of all the ancillary stuff.  I want to get my house in order. It sounds simple enough doesn’t it?  Oh, I have my days where I am so proud of myself because I’ve managed to get rid of that putrid colored sweater and the shoes that have the ripped soles and the belts that I’ve had for over 15 years and never worn. But after the ‘getting psyched’ period is over, I end up stuffing my drawers, closets, and garage full of more stuff!  It’s not that I’m a big buyer of things…in fact I’m rather ‘cheap’ when it comes to that.  So I don't think my problem is to stop buying stuff, but rather purging what I have.

I am blessed with three talented sisters, and one of them is an interior decorator.  Debbie just recently posted some organizational tips on her beautiful home decor website. (check it out)
http://www.moorefromtheheart.com/

She reminded me that in order to get organized, everything needs a home. "OH, You mean every room doesn't have a junk drawer, and my wrapping supplies are not supposed to be strewn all over my house and I can't leave the water bottle, my mail, my cell phone and my purse out on the kitchen counter?"

I may need some therapy to deal with this undertaking,  or a support group like you all....But this year I am determined to take another stab at de-cluttering my home.  I'm going to take advice from Buddha and not adjust my goal, but adjust my action steps. I'll begin by first doing some research, then I'll adopt a new organizational plan!  Of all the books and articles out there, surely one of them will help me reach my goal and help me get my house in order.

Perhaps you have some great tips for me as well...Post your thoughts on the blog or email me at:
