Are you all God intended you to be?

“Resistance is the most toxic force on the planet, that stunts us and makes us less then God intended for us to be.” Steven Pressfield
Our quote comes from the author of the book, The War of Art, that I talked about last week.  I mentioned that I hadn’t really ever had a visual picture of what resistance looked like.  I mistook it for other things such as lack of will power, laziness, busyness, or life’s trials.  I thought all along it was my weak character that kept me from being able to accomplish the goals I set, or realize the dreams I have.

Resistance can invade a person’s body and become a spouse, a friend, a co-worker. Have you ever had a loved one squash an idea, or discourage a new plan? Resistance also embeds itself into our own mind, our brain, our heart or our body.  If it doesn’t win at one location, ‘resistance’, quickly scampers to another.  Do you find yourself unmotivated some mornings and can’t quite make it to the gym or paint that picture?  Do you ever find disruptions pop up in your life and keep you from finishing the garage organizing project, or writing the article or reading the Bible? Have you ever found yourself too sore, or too tired to go out and run, or that it’s too hot, too cold, too windy, or too wet to go for that walk? Do you hear that nagging voice remind you that it’s silly to think that you might ever be an author, an artist, a singer, a business owner, or a triathlon runner?  Or the echo that reminds you of all the failures you’ve had before.  “You don’t really think you could ever get that job, lose that weight, find that lifelong partner, fight that anxiety, win that competition, create that company, conquer the addiction, sell that book or climb that mountain?.....Well then, I guess there’s no reason for us to get off that couch, is there?”

Can you see it now….once we strip off its deceptive mask, there stands that familiar enemy…resistance.  In response to last week’s blog, I received an email that asked this question…. Isn’t this dark force actually Satan?

Well in my opinion, if it’s not Satan, then it’s a close relative.   We are up against a giant, and one whose role is to keep us from being all that God intended us to be.  In order to defeat resistance we must first be able to identify him, develop a healthy respect for him, and create and practice a plan to fight against him.  And finally, we need to use our plan as a shield on the battlefield as we meet Resistance head to head.

It sounds like I need to enlist in basic training and get myself fit for the battle ahead.  How about it, would you like to join me?
