Nutrition and the Brain
| “The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.” Thomas Edison |
I did a double take when I read this quote. Not just because of what it said, but because of who said it. That would have been some 110 years ago right? Did Thomas Edison really say that?
You don't have to watch TV for very long to see that there are a huge amount of commercials these days that encourage us to take drugs, and it seems that even our physicians are quick to write out a prescription for a quick fix for whatever ails us. What happened to treating disease with nutrition? Until we change our paradigm of thinking to the idea that a healthy body really begins with good nutrition and plenty of exercise then we fall prey to those that would have us just take a pill, rather than take responsibility and take action . All the while, statistics continue to mount on the American crisis of poor nutrition and little exercise...and the pharmaceutical companies continue to rake in the dough!
I think most of us would quickly agree that nutrition plays a big role in our physical health, but do we realize how important the role of nutrition plays in our mental health?
Watch this 7 minute video and hear Russell Blaylock, a retired neuro surgeon discuss the connection of nutrition and the brain.
If we continue detoxing our brain then, it becomes apparent that we don't need to just prune the dead negative thoughts, but we need to literally feed our brain. Just reading or hearing about the importance of healthy eating doesn't always cause us to take action however. We have to actually use our free will to change our thoughts and ultimately our actions with regards to better nutrition. This is a good place to visit our discussion of how our words create our reality. We often speak as if the responsibility of the shape and health of our bodies belongs to someone else. We say things like, "I'll never get in shape, I'll never feel like I did when I was younger, I hate those people who go to the gym....I wish I could look like she does....
If you eat healthy foods already...you can do better and If you don't eat very healthy foods...you can do better.
Read these pages in Who You Switched Off My Brain (pages 130-134). Here Dr. Leaf explains how essential nutrients are to our mental processes,
Last fall I began blogging with a goal of making small changes in my life to create big results. One of the first goals I set for myself was eating more healthy foods, more often. I did a lot of research to determine what the healthiest foods are. I then created a grocery shopping list for my family. It's a great guide and reminder for me to buy healthy foods at the store. If you're interested in getting a copy of my grocery shopping list just send me an email and I'll be happy to forward it to you.
Please share some of your 'aha' moments or observations on the blog or email me at smallsteps4bigresults@yahoo.com
